Polar night in Tromsø 2026-27

For seven weeks the sun stays below the horizon. It is not black all day, and it gives you the longest aurora nights of the year, starting before most people finish lunch.

Tromsø lies at almost 70 degrees north, far enough above the Arctic Circle that the sun does not rise at all for about seven weeks each winter. Norwegians call it mørketid, the dark time.

Here are the exact dates for winter 2026-27, the light you can actually plan around, and how the dark weeks change both your aurora odds and your days.

The quick answer

In Tromsø the last sunrise of 2026 is on 26 November and the first of 2027 is on 16 January, so the polar night runs from 27 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. Even at the solstice there are about four and a half hours of civil twilight, roughly 09:30 to 14:00. The sky is dark enough for aurora from about 15:30, which makes this the longest window of the year. Mountains hide the returning sun from town until around 21 January.

When is the polar night in Tromsø in 2026-27?

From 27 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. The last sunrise is on 26 November and the first on 16 January, both lasting only about an hour.

Visit Tromsø gives "approximately from 27 November to 15 January", and the Sun's position for 2026-27 matches. Those dates assume a flat horizon. Tromsø is ringed by mountains, so from the city centre the sun stays hidden for several days longer in January. Visit Tromsø notes it is "usually not visible from central Tromsø until later in January."

How much daylight is there during the polar night?

About four and a half to six hours of twilight around midday, depending on the date. On a clear day it is bright enough to walk, drive and take photos without a torch.

Polar night does not mean 24 hours of black. At the solstice the sun is only about three degrees below the horizon at noon. The sky runs from deep blue to pink and orange on the southern horizon and back again, and snow on the ground reflects what light there is. Visit Tromsø describes it as "the sky shifting between soft shades of pink and purple and deep blue hues."

On a cloudy, snowless day in late November, it is grey and short. On a clear day in January with fresh snow, it is the best light of the year for photos. Plan outdoor sightseeing for 10:00 to 13:30, and put museums and cafés in the afternoon.

Is the polar night the best time to see the northern lights?

It gives the most dark hours, from about 15:30 to 07:30, so more chances per day. It does not change the aurora itself, and cloud still decides most nights.

The aurora does not care whether the sun is up; it is there by day too, just invisible. What the polar night changes is the length of your window. In mid December the sky is dark enough to see aurora from about 15:40 until about 07:40 the next morning. Early-evening displays happen, and you can sometimes see the lights on the walk back from an afternoon coffee.

The peak hours are still roughly 20:00 to 02:00, according to Visit Tromsø, and the coast is often cloudy in early winter. December is also the busiest stretch for hotels and tours. If you want the dark with fewer crowds, aim for the first half of January, after the holidays. The new moons, the darkest skies of the stretch, fall on 9 December 2026 and 7 January 2027.

Our take: the polar night is great for the experience, not a magic fix for the odds. Stay several nights and book a chase early, as you would in any month. The 2026-27 season outlook has the other key dates.

What can you do in the daytime during the polar night?

Use the midday twilight for outdoor trips (whale watching, snowshoeing, the cable car, a drive), and keep the afternoon dark for museums, a sauna or a long dinner before an aurora night.

The polar night overlaps with the winter whale season. Visit Tromsø says orcas and humpback whales gather north of Tromsø to feed on herring, "usually from the beginning of November until the end of January", in recent years mainly around Skjervøy and Kvænangen.

In town, the Fjellheisen cable car runs from 09:00 until around midnight according to its listing, so you can ride up in the blue midday light and come back up after dark if the sky clears. Snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing and Sámi culture trips run through the winter. In the afternoons, the Polar Museum, Polaria and the Arctic Cathedral are all short trips from the centre.

Two events fall at the end of the dark weeks. The Tromsø International Film Festival runs 18 to 24 January 2027 (TIFF), and the classical and jazz Northern Lights Festival (Nordlysfestivalen) is held in late January and early February each year.

When does the sun come back to Tromsø?

The sun clears a flat horizon on 16 January 2027, but from the city it usually appears around 21 January, when locals eat sun buns to celebrate.

Low sun and high mountains mean the first sunrises are only seen from open viewpoints. Visit Northern Norway describes how people in Tromsø wait at viewpoints on the island for "the first rays of sunshine in two months", and eat solboller (sun buns) on 21 January.

From then on the light comes back fast. By 1 February the sun is up for about five hours, and by mid February you get more than seven. For many visitors, late January to February is the best mix: daylight for activities, snow on the ground, and still about 12 hours of darkness a night. Our trip planning guide covers how many nights to stay.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see the northern lights during the day in the polar night?
