Aurora Wonderland Basecamp · Lyngen Alps (Nord-Lenangen)
Aurora Wonderland takes up to 12 guests to its basecamp in the Lyngen Alps, about 1.5 hours from Tromsø, where you sleep in a glass-roofed lavvo heated by your own wood stove. Pick it for the time: instead of a few hours at a viewpoint, you get the whole night to watch the sky from bed.

The basecamp sits at Nord-Lenangen in the Lyngen Alps, about a 1.5-hour drive from Tromsø according to Visit Tromsø, and the route includes a short ferry crossing at Breivikeidet. It's far from city light, with mountains and fjords all round. You leave Prostneset at 11:45 on a bus marked "Arctic Route" and come back to Tromsø around 11:00 the next day.
Each Crystal Lavvo is a Sami-style tent with a glass roof, private to your group (2 to 4 guests, at least 2), heated by a wood stove. You keep the stove going yourself through the night, which guests describe as part of the fun. Visit Tromsø's page notes the firewood is provided and that you can watch the sky without leaving bed. Bathrooms are shared: one indoor, one outhouse. The afternoon brings a guided nature walk on snowshoes or on foot, and you get an expedition meal, dinner and breakfast, plus coffee, tea and snacks.
This is a fixed site, so cloud over Lyngen means cloud over your roof. The trade-off is hours of watching instead of a short stop, and one guest called it a way of catching the lights "despite bad weather". There are no shops nearby and no alcohol sold, so bring your own. The listing can't cater for severe nut allergies or combined gluten-free and vegan diets.
Prostneset terminal, Samuel Arnesens gate 5. The "Arctic Route" bus leaves at 11:45. Hotel pickup is also included.
The drive north includes a ferry crossing at Breivikeidet. At camp you get your suit, boots and lavvo.
A nature walk on snowshoes or on foot, depending on the weather, then an expedition meal.
Dinner at camp, tripods out, and the whole night to watch from outside or from bed.
You add wood to keep the lavvo warm. The aurora, if it comes, is right above the glass.
Breakfast, then the drive back to Tromsø, arriving around 11:00.

Yes, if the sky is clear and the aurora is active: the roof is glass. The camp doesn't move, so cloud is the risk. Our best time guide covers the clearest months.
