Northern Soul Adventures · Tromsø, coast or inland

Learn to photograph the aurora

Northern Soul Adventures runs a chase built around your camera: the guides set you up on a tripod, explain the settings and shoot the group too. Pick it if you want to go home with your own aurora photos, not only someone else's.

Northern Lights Photography Tour

About this experience

Most aurora tours include a photographer. This one teaches you to be one. The guides bring tripods and headlamps, help you set focus, shutter and ISO on your own camera or phone, and keep an eye on your shots through the night. Guests describe them as people who know the science and the photography, and who make the small group feel personal.

The night runs 6 to 9 hours depending on how far the clear sky is. At the stop there's a campfire, soup, cookies and hot drinks, plus thermal suits, hand warmers and heated insoles, which help when you're standing still beside a tripod. You also get free web-resolution photos of the night. Drop-off is in central Tromsø.

Read the small print. The terrain is rough and snowy, so the listing rules out guests with mobility problems, children under 8 and anyone under 135 cm. There's no refund if the aurora doesn't show. The listing makes a useful point about the moon: a new moon gives the darkest sky, while a full moon washes out a faint aurora but lights up the mountains for landscape shots.
