Aurora forecast for Tromsø tonight

Most aurora apps answer the wrong question for Tromsø. The lights are usually there. What you need to know is whether the clouds will let you see them, and where to stand if they won't.

"Are there northern lights in Tromsø now?" is one of the most searched aurora questions, and the honest answer on a dark winter night is: probably, somewhere above the clouds.

This post shows how to read tonight's forecast in the right order: cloud first, darkness second, activity third. It covers what a Kp number really means this far north, which free apps and pages to keep open, and how to tell if it is happening right now.

The quick answer

Check cloud cover first: on Yr's hourly forecast, or on a cloud map such as Windy, look for clear sky at your spot between about 20:00 and 02:00. Then check activity: Tromsø lies so far north that Kp 0 to 2 can already bring aurora overhead, and a high Kp does not mean a better show here. For right now, use the Tromsø nowcast and the Skibotn all-sky camera from the Norwegian Centre for Space Weather. If the coast is cloudy, a chase tour drives to the gaps.

Are there northern lights in Tromsø now?

On a dark, clear night between September and early April, there is a good chance of some aurora overhead. To check this minute, look at a live all-sky camera and the local nowcast, then step outside and let your eyes adjust.

Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, the ring around the magnetic pole where aurora is most frequent. Visit Tromsø says the lights are often most active between about 20:00 and 02:00 and can show up at any time of the dark night, even from a hotel window in town.

The quickest live check is a camera pointed at the sky. The Norwegian Centre for Space Weather, run by Tromsø Geophysical Observatory at UiT, streams an all-sky camera from Skibotn, inland and often clearer than the coast. If that frame is green, go out. Give your eyes ten minutes away from screens and streetlights. Faint aurora looks grey or white to the eye and turns green on a phone in night mode.

From mid April to late August the answer is no, whatever the apps say. The nights are too bright.

On a clear night the aurora often shows up over town too, though darker spots beat the streetlights.

How do you check the cloud cover for tonight?

Open the hourly forecast on Yr for Tromsø and for inland places such as Skibotn or Kilpisjärvi, then look at a cloud map. Clear sky in your viewing hours beats any aurora number.

Yr, run by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and NRK, is Norway's main public weather service. Search for Tromsø, open the hour-by-hour view, and read the sky symbols for the evening: clear, partly cloudy or overcast. Then do the same for a few places east and south, such as Skibotn in the Lyngen area or Kilpisjärvi over the Finnish border. The coast and the inland valleys often have different weather on the same night.

A cloud map adds the bigger picture. Windy shows forecast cloud by layer, which helps, because thin high cloud lets a bright aurora through and thick low cloud stops everything. Look for a gap that sits over somewhere you can reach and stays there for a few hours.

This is exactly the job a chase guide does every afternoon, with more experience and a vehicle. If the whole coast is grey and the gap is three hours away, a chase with no set distance limit is the realistic way to get there.

What does the Kp index mean in Tromsø?

Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of global geomagnetic disturbance. Tromsø is so far north that Kp 0 to 2 can already put aurora overhead, and a high Kp mostly helps places further south.

The Kp index comes from magnetometers around the world and is updated every three hours. On NOAA's space weather scales, Kp 5 is a G1 (minor) storm and Kp 9 is G5 (extreme). Many aurora apps are built for readers in Britain, Germany or the northern United States, where a storm is what pushes the oval far enough south.

Tromsø is already under it. Yr's own aurora help page sets the Kp threshold at 0 for geomagnetic latitudes of 66 to 74 degrees, which is the band Tromsø falls in. In plain terms: Kp 1 on a clear night is worth going out for. A storm can bring brighter, faster, more colourful displays, but it also moves the oval south, so the strongest part can end up over southern Norway rather than overhead. That is why Visit Tromsø says high solar activity has little effect directly below the oval.

KpNOAA storm levelWhat it usually means in Tromsø
0 to 2NoneQuiet to active arcs, often visible overhead on clear nights
3 to 4NoneActive, more movement, good nights
5G1 minorStrong displays possible, aurora widely seen in Norway
6 to 7G2 to G3Bright, fast, colourful; the oval may sit south of Tromsø
8 to 9G4 to G5Rare; aurora seen far south in Europe

Which aurora apps and websites should you use?

Yr for clouds and a simple aurora index, the Norwegian Centre for Space Weather for a Tromsø nowcast and live camera, and NOAA's 30-minute forecast for the oval.

You do not need a paid app. These free sources cover it:

  • Yr: hourly cloud forecasts plus an aurora forecast up to three days ahead on the Nearby tab, combining Kp, your latitude and a short-term nowcast. You can switch on push alerts when the nowcast passes 30 percent.
  • NOSWE aurora forecast for Tromsø: a nowcast plus 1-hour and 4-hour forecasts made for this city, with the Skibotn all-sky camera on the same site.
  • NOAA 30-minute aurora forecast: a map of the oval and its strength for the next half hour or so.
  • NOSWE 3-day Kp forecast: useful for picking which evening to book a tour, less useful for the next hour.

Treat anything past 24 hours as a rough guide. Solar wind forecasts get reliable only about an hour out, once the stream reaches a satellite upstream of Earth.

Fifteen guests at most and no distance limit on the long option: the guide follows the clear sky.

Should you book a tour if tonight's forecast looks bad?

Book anyway if you have only a few nights, and choose a chase rather than a fixed site. Chase tours often run in poor weather, because the afternoon forecast can be wrong by evening.

Northern weather changes quickly. Visit Tromsø puts it simply: "if it's cloudy, a hole may suddenly appear in the cloud cover." A bad-looking afternoon forecast is not a reason to cancel. It is a reason to pick a tour that can move. The minibus chase runs even in poor weather, according to the listing, and its team checks forecasts to pick spots on the night.

On a clear night, you can do it yourself: walk to a dark beach on the island, or ride the Fjellheisen cable car up to Storsteinen. On a cloudy night, a fixed-site evening such as a dinner cruise cannot leave the cloud behind. That is the trade-off. More in seeing the lights without a tour and how to photograph them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the northern lights in Tromsø tonight?

If it is dark (September to early April) and the sky is clear, there is a good chance. Check the cloud forecast on Yr, then a live all-sky camera, and go out between about 20:00 and 02:00.

What Kp do you need to see the northern lights in Tromsø?

Very little. Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, so Kp 0 to 2 can already show aurora overhead on a clear night. A higher Kp helps places further south more than Tromsø.

What is the best aurora app for Tromsø?

Yr for cloud forecasts and its aurora index, plus the Norwegian Centre for Space Weather's Tromsø nowcast and Skibotn all-sky camera. NOAA's 30-minute forecast shows the oval. All are free.

How accurate is the aurora forecast?

Fairly good for the next hour, rough for the next three days. Cloud forecasts are often the bigger error, which is why chase guides decide on the night.
